Etiquette Question - Escorting Guests to a Conference Room

Dear Paula,

I am the Executive Assistant to the President of a small manufacturing company and when the president has a meeting here at the facility, I usually go to the lobby and bring the attendees to the conference room.

When I am escorting outside visitors down the rather long hallway to the main conference room, should I be walking in front of them (leading the way) or beside them (guiding them along)?

Please advise as this situation comes up rather often.

Best regards,

Dear Karen-

My personal opinion is that if the hallway is wide enough, it is most pleasant to walk alongside visitors and converse with them along the way. (You might ask if their trip was pleasant or if there is anything they will need before or during the meeting.

Of course, if the group you’re escorting is large or if the hallway is narrow or includes many turns, that may become awkward. Leading from the front in that case might be necessary.

This question does lend itself to several opinions. I'm sure our blog readers will have many other intelligent thoughts.

Hello Karen

I think what Paula said is very good advice, but remember you are the one that knows the way from the lobby to the conference room. Most people expect you to lead them, otherwise they might get lost. How awkward would that be?
